Why We’re Here

“There’s something about mountains... They [capture] the human imagination after all. Grandiosity, adventure, beauty, danger, sanctuary – the mountains have it all. They are the giants of the natural world, the Kings and Queens of geography, bountiful in their best moments, and grave in their worst. To look upon these rocky behemoths is humbling enough, but to be amongst them, or to climb them? Now, that is a supreme experience. Indeed, the mountains will always soar, regardless of what we do, whether hiking below their coniferous trees, mining through their jagged rocks, or struggling atop a snowcapped summit, they will keep standing mightily and they will keep on growing for another millennia.”

Seeing the above quote for the first time brought me to tears. I have never seen a more apt description of my mother. Much like the mountains described above, to know her was a supreme experience. Full of beauty and grandeur, she was a spiritual giant. Exuding gratefulness wherever she went, even when she was diagnosed with bone cancer in 1996. She lived 10 years longer than expected, persevering, and standing mightily through both tumultuous and rewarding experiences that brought us all closer together as a family. Her philosophy was: "You can climb any mountain if you believe in yourself."

Motivated by her endurance, I established a home health and hospice agency that is privately owned and family-operated. Inspired by her philosophy, I called it Everest. I wanted to make a difference in her life and in the lives of others.

Our metaphorical mountains are all unique. For some, hiking their summit means recovery. For others, reaching the peak means that they have come to terms with a different plan than the one they thought they wanted. Nobody should climb alone. The healthcare journey is such a special and humbling time for those who are receiving care and those in their support system. Climbing a mountain requires trust in your fellow climbers. Feeling like you are able to lean on each other for support when times get tough. My team and I strive to provide compassionate, high quality, professional care on a more personal level by including you and your supporters in the planning of your care. Many years later, our philosophy is still the same: "You can climb any mountain if you believe in yourself."
